Environmental and animal protection is included in the Constitution

What is our role in the natural ecosystems? Are humans superior to other animals? These are some of the questions that lead to another, perhaps more uncomfortable question: is the way we treat animals fair? The Italian Senate has made a historic decision, inserting the protection of animals and the environment into the country's Constitution, giving what has been deemed a sign of great maturity and sensitivity. The resolution was approved with 224 votes in favour, no votes against and 23 abstained. The path to the approval and implementation of the new law is still far from complete, but environmentalists consider this vote an excellent start.

Respecting the environment is a matter of collective responsibility

One of the most interesting aspects of the amendments to the Italian Constitution is that both public and private activities must be carried out without damaging the environment, as well as respecting all existing laws and regulations. This law is part of a broader policy of sustainability and respect for the environment that is gaining traction not only in Italy but throughout Europe. On the other hand, the choices of many governments reflect the evolution of a common sentiment and shared values in terms of environmental and wildlife protection. This decision, say environmentalists, will positively affect not only our present, but above all the well-being of future generations.

Has the emergency made us more sensitive?

Many people wonder why this special concern for the environment has arisen at a time when humanity is facing one of the most serious crises in modern history. How is it that, at a time when we are the ones in need of help, we turn our attention to the outside world and to other forms of life? In part, of course, this is the result of years of environmental awareness and movements, but there is also an underlying reflection on the fact that protecting the environment in which we live and seeking to be at peace and in harmony with it is the only way to protect our own civilisation and snatch it back from the brink of collapse. So have we really become more sensitive? In part, probably yes. Undoubtedly, the demands and views of those who believe in environmental sustainability are prevailing.
